Compost Making

Today we learnt how to make the best organic compost for our plants. We also discussed aquaponics and the Transplantation of plants.

1.  Organic Compost Making:

Meenakshi mam though us how to make the best organic compost making. These are the steps to follow if you would like to have the best organic compost for your plants.

Materials for compost making:

  • A big bucket (which can be able to contain a month's vegetable waste.)
  • Three medium-sized rocks.
  • Dry leaves
  • Topsoil
  • Cow dung / Butter Milk
  • Vegetable Wastes

Step 1: Take the big bucket,

Step 2: Make 3 finger-sized holes at the bottom of the bucket.

Step 3: Take the 3 medium-sized rocks to cover the holes, this is done because excess water shall drip from the bucket.

Step 4: Take enough dry leaves that can be used to make a layer for the bucket and spread it around the bucket.

Step 5: Take some soil and mix it with cow dung/buttermilk and spread it over the leaves like a layer.

Step 6: Then add the vegetable wastes that you have collected for a day and spread them over the soil.

Step 7: Add some more soil on top of the vegetable peels.

Step 8: Mix all the items together.

Step 9: Sprinkle water.

Step 10: Keep adding vegetable peels and dry leaves for a month or two.

Step 11: Always keep t in a place without sunlight or cover it with a lid.

Step 12: After a month, dump the compost on the ground and mix it well, take all the big stuff and use the compost for your plants.

2. Aquafarming:

Renuga mam and Nisha mam thought us about aquafarming. We will give you a small brief about aquafarming. Aquafarming is a method used to grow plants in aquariums. If you take a plant and keep it in the water with fish, the water in the aquarium will help the plants to grow and the tank gets cleaned.

3. Transplantation:

Transplantation was thought of by some of the students in the club. They thought us how to do transplantation when to do it, why should we do it, and to which plants should we do it.

So transplantation is a method used to transfer small saplings from a pot to the ground.

We should do this when the plant is too big to fit the pot.

We should do this so the pot doesn't break, the plant will get more nutrients from the ground etc.

These are some of the plants that can be transplanted:

  • Celery
  • Eggplant
  • Carrots
  • Leaks etc.
  • Other than this we were given a challenge. The challenge was that whatever plants that you have grown or you are about to grow shall be recorded by taking pictures and combining them. The teachers wanted to see our loveable plants by the end of this year. Please visit the blog page "Students Work Part 1".
