Day 5: Seeds

Seeds

Today we learnt about seeds, how to test whether the seeds are good or bad by doing a viability test, seed collecting, seed banks and seed preservation.

1. Viability test for seeds:

We learnt how to test our seeds, a few of the students volunteered and showed it in front of the class and the teachers were helping us along the way. One of the benefits of seed testing is that we can choose the good seeds for plantation and not the bad ones, we can also find whether the seeds we use for cooking are good or not.

The materials required for seed viability test are:
  • A transparent bowl
  • 1 litre of water
  • Different types of seeds (Eg: Brinjal, Chilly, Coriander, Watermelon etc.)

Step 1: Take the glass bowl and pour the water into it.

Step 2: Then take any type of seed and put it into the bowl of water.

Step 3: Then mix the seeds and wait for two minutes.

The seeds that float on the top are bad seeds, which means they are hollow inside. And the seeds that are in the bottom are the good seeds. If you wait more than 2 minutes all the seeds will sink because the seeds would have observed water, so please don't keep the seeds longer.

Step 4: After 2 minutes collect the seeds at the top and throw them away and you can plant the seeds that are in the bottom or let them soak overnight and then plant them.

Step 5: Try it out with other seeds.

Please don't throw the water away, instead, you can use it for your plants since the water contains the nutrients from the seeds. And now you have learnt how to check your seeds.

2. Seeds Collecting, seed banks and seed preservation:

We learnt about seed collecting, seed banks and seeds preservation through a presentation and a few videos. Please check out the slide for information about these topics.

3. Student's Work:

More students showed their plants, which they have done after they joined the club. The link below is to see the student's work.
